Amalfi and Amalfi Coast
The town of Amalfi gives its name to the stupendous Amalfi Coast, since 1997 declared by UNESCO World Heritage of Humanity site.
After having been a maritime power capable of rivalling even Venice, having created the code of maritime law known as the Amalfi Table, and having being home to famed mariners who in the 13-14th centuries perfected the magnetic compass for use at sea (although the inventor Flavio Gioia, whose bronze monument is on Amalfi’s seafront square by the same name, never existed), Amalfi was conquered by the Normans and lost its status of cosmopolitan center open to the Mediterranean due to Saracen invasions, pirate raids, internal strife, and natural disasters.
The beauty and warm climate of the place, impressive scenery and artistic heritage, among which the splendid Amalfi Cathedral, sitting on top of the grand staircase from Amalfi’s main square. have remained.
The most beautiful beaches in Amalfi are: Marina Grande Beach (aka “Spiaggia Grande”), the largest, is sandy with small pebbles, central and fashionable, next to the pier of the ferries, a beach where you can find eateries and establishments with umbrellas and deck chairs, walk on the seafront promenade and look at the boutiques; Il Duoglio Beach, a corner of paradise with small rocks and very clean water, umbrellas and a restaurant, not easy to reach due to the 400 steps leading down to the beach from the state road through a beautiful path rich in vegetation, although you can also take the boats departing every hour from the pier; Santa Croce Beach, reachable only by sea by boats that leave from Amalfi, has crystal clear sea, two restaurants and much tranquility; Atrani Beach, in the tiny village of Atrani, Italy’s smallest local authority and of of its most beautiful, practically joined to Amalfi, is a small and sheltered beach split by the mouth of the river Dragone, favoured by young families, and is extremely picturesque as is the village of Atrani itself, often compared to a nativity scene on the sea, traffic-free, very well-preserved, with its arches, alleys, little white squares, courtyards, gardens, orchards and staircases, cottages with balconies and flowers just beyond the beach, this is often the place where scenes of Amalfi are filmed.
Amalfi is not only sea, art and history, though. The surrounding hills offer several walks among greenery and wilderness, the most famous of which is the Path of the Gods, an 11-kilometre high-altitude hike affording incredible Mediterranean Sea views.
