Positano is often called the “jewel of the Amalfi Coast” because, in this seaside region of the world which is already unbelievably beautiful, Positano is, if possible, a vision even more stunning than its neighbouring villages and surroundings. Magic, you could say.
Amalfi, the 5,000-inhabitants town after which this coastal area is named, has a nobler, more glorious historical pedigree, having been since the 9th century AD one of Italy’s four Medieval naval republics fighting each other over the control of the Mediterranean, the others being Venice, Genoa and Pisa.
With its 4,000 people Positano, a holiday resort since the time of Roman Emperors, as confirmed by a Roman villa and other remains, is only a bit smaller than Amalfi but very elegant and sophisticated.
Positano’s scenery is made particularly dramatic by its nature of being carved on a mountainside. Positano is made up of many terraces and flights of steps descending from the top of the village on the hill all the way down to the beaches.
