Mercure Hotel Viareggio
is a surprisingly inexpensive 4-star beachfront hotel, 5 minutes’ walk from the long, wide, sandy beach.
The hotel is not in the center of Viareggio, but rather at the end of its seafront, nearly at the start of the next beach resort on the Riviera della Versilia, Lido di Camaiore, with its own seafront promenade full of bars, cafes, pubs (one used to be the Sgt Pepper’s Pub, a historic, legendary pub, but it was shut in 2020), pizzerias, restaurants, shops and entertainment.
Mercure Hotel Viareggio is one of the very rare, if not the only, hotel in Viareggio to have a free very large car park for its guests.
In fact this is a major reason why we chose it. I stayed here once, and then returned, as I loved it, set as it is between the sea on one side and the extensive western pinewood of Viareggio (the town has two of them), Pineta di Ponente, of which the hotel offers lovely views. Bicycles can be rented from the nearby Pineta, look for “Noleggio di Biciclette” or “Nolo di Bici”: there are many of these places, which can also repair bicycles.
Hotel Mercure Viareggio is very easy to get to and find.
The hotel’s staff speak several languages, including English.
Hotel facilities include an outdoor swimming pool; baggage storage; 24-hour front desk (we arrived at 2am with no problem at all); sun terrace; fax and photocopying; a restaurant; room service; a bar; meeting and banquet facilities; garden; and others.
Pets are allowed.
Clean towels are offered every day.
If you come to Viareggio during the Carnival period in February/March, as we once did, a bonus of the Mercure Hotel is that, due to its location, it allows you to see from its guestrooms’ balconies the procession of enormous floats moving along the road from their hangars to the seafront for the Carnival parade.
Rooms are for 1, 2 or 3 people. All rooms and suites have private balcony with views, outdoor furniture and outdoor dining area, free WiFi, air conditioning, tea/coffee maker, desk, telephone, minibar, flat-screen TV, en-suite bathroom with free toiletries, safety deposit box, and more amenities.

Viareggio is the main town and resort of the Versilia Riviera, a long, uninterrupted stretch of sandy beaches on the coast of northern Tuscany, in Italy.
The beaches, discos, night life and seafront of Viareggio have made it one of the top, most fashionable seaside resorts in Italy since the 19th century, reaching a peak of popularity in the 1960s when it became synonymous with summer fun. The seafront is a promenade of trendy shops, bars and restaurants.
Nearby is the prestigious Viareggio yacht harbour, where the ultra-rich keep their leisure boats, with its many yachting clubs.
Viareggio is in a special location, surrounded by both natural beauty and great works of art. From Piazza D’Azeglio and Piazza Mazzini you can catch the coach to Florence (90 minutes by coach, 1 hour by car), Pisa (20-30 minutes), Lucca (20-30 minutes), Torre del Lago Puccini with its lake and the villa where the great opera composer Puccini lived and the Puccini opera festival (10 minutes), and many other cities of art.
