You can see Roman ships’ hulls and other parts at close range: breathtaking. The Museum is housed in the Arsenali Medicei, a group of 16th-century buildings that were a shipyard for shipbuilding dating back to the time when the Medicis ruled over Tuscany. Grand Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici decided to build an arsenal in Pisa for the ships of the powerful Tuscan fleet. Pisa at the time was on the sea and had an important port, being one of the four Naval Republics of Italy (Venice, Genoa, Pisa, Amalfi) before the port of Pisa completely silted up and the city was cut off from the sea. The old port of Pisa was then replaced by the Medicis, who founded the city of Livorno (Leghorn), few miles north of Pisa on the coast, where you can still admire the Porto Mediceo resembling a castle with its bastions and towers.

Pisa and the Leaning Tower

By Enza Ferreri

Pisa, home to that icon of Italy, the Leaning Tower (and if you see it up close you realize that it does lean very much indeed), is a city, or rather a large town of about 90,000 inhabitants (many more if you consider the tourists and the university students), in northern Tuscany, near the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea, an arm of the Mediterranean.

In 15 minutes from Pisa you can get to the beaches of Marina di Pisa and Tirrenia, and in half an hour’s drive you reach Viareggio, 12 miles north of Pisa on the Tyrrhenian coast, the seaside resort in the fashionable Riviera della Versilia where I was born. I studied at Pisa University and was in the city every day for 3 years, then I lived in Pisa for another 4 years. I know the city pretty well and hope that this can help you in finding the right hotel for you.

Pisa is so near the sea that it used to be on the sea, so much so that it was, along with Venice, Genoa and Amalfi, one of Italy’s four Maritime Republics (“repubbliche marinare”) in the Middle Ages, always fighting with each other for supremacy over the Mediterranean waves. They still do, in the ritualised form of a historic regatta competition held in turn by each city. In Pisa the race is on the day of its patron saint, Saint Rainier, 17 June, and Pisa is the only former Maritime Republic to hold the regatta not on the sea but on the river Arno which, after Florence, flows through Pisa city centre.

The University of Pisa, founded in 1343, is one of the world’s oldest universities. It is in this city that the great physicist and astronomer of Florentine parentage Galileo Galilei, who paved the way to Isaac Newton and classical mechanics, was born, studied and experimented. Pisa’s airport is named after him.
