Luxury, Canal-side, Historic Hotels in Venice

On this page go to:

The whole of Venice and its lagoon have long been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO, the United Nations’ cultural body.

Venice is an astonishing open-air museum floating in the romantic waters of the lagoon. A city like no other.

To see the city you only need your feet: you can walk through the entire width and breadth of Venice through the picturesque narrow alleyways (“calli”), the squares big and small (“campi” and “campielli”) and its magnificent bridges.

Venice can be visited by boat with its typical means of transport, the gondolas, or by using public transport, including water-buses (“vaporetti”), which allow you to move from one end of the city to the other along the Grand Canal (“Canal Grande”), which goes through all of Venice.

Vaporetti regularly go up and down the Canal Grande, the Canale della Giudecca and towards the islands of the Venetian Lagoon. A vaporetto fare (except Alilaguna, Fusina and Clodia services) is 7 euros per person and lasts 60 minutes from validation even if you change vaporetto in the same direction.

The Grand Canal, 3,800 metres long, is Venice’s main waterway. It divides the city’s historic centre into two parts by drawing a reversed “S” from the Liberty Bridge (“Ponte della Libertà”) to Saint Mark’s Basin (“Bacino di San Marco”), the stretch of water of the Venetian lagoon in front of Saint Mark’s Square.

Travelling along the Grand Canal you have the opportunity to admire Venice’s most beautiful and famous buildings, as throughout its length it is lined by magnificent palaces (“palazzi”) and churches, mostly built from the 12th to the 17th centuries, displaying the wealth and art created by the “Serenissima” (most serene) Republic of Venice.

Every year Venetians re-enact on the Grand Canal centuries-old traditions like the “Regata Storica”.

Venice – Hotel Saturnia & International

Hotel Saturnia & International

is an impressive 4-star hotel in the centre of Venice, in an excellent position 200 yards (5 minutes’ walk) from Piazza San Marco (St. Mark’s Square), and a short walk from all the main tourist sights of the city.

Public transport and a vaporetto stop are 3 minutes’ walk from the hotel, which is in Via (or “Calle”, as Venetians say) XXII Marzo, one of Venice’s most important streets and the most fashionable street for shopping, with its many big labels and designer brand names.

Hotel Saturnia & International is housed in a precious 14th-century palace, one of the oldest in Venice, which was the residence of the noble Pisani family.

The hotel building’s architecture is traditional Venetian, with stone-clad base. The hotel interiors show many signs of the palace’s historic beauty.

The large hall on the ground floor, characteristic of Venetian patrician palaces, captures the ambience of ancient Venice with its wooden staircase and heavy iron chandeliers. Large landings, fireplaces, high coffered ceilings, antique furniture, stained glass windows, charming halls in very classic style are part of the hotel interiors.

The hotel has a famous restaurant, La Caravella, opened in 1963, with a characteristic elegant ambience recreating the interior of an ancient sailing ship, or caravel. It is specialised in historic Venetian traditional cuisine, served during the long Italian summer in a typical Venetian courtyard decorated with plants. From its early beginnings La Caravella has always been considered one of the best restaurants in Venice, and it’s one of the city’s historic, international venues.

A curiosity: La Caravella Restaurant replaced the prestigious Ciro’s Bar, the American bar that was serving international cocktails and drinks and was favoured by Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, who mentioned it in her writings.

The hotel has a solarium terrace with astonishing views of Venice rooftops and the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute dome, where you can sip a chilled aperitif, cocktail or glass of wine at the end of a day of buzzing sightseeing.

Hotel Saturnia & International is only 100 yards from the famous 18th-century La Fenice Theatre, 10 minutes’ walk from Rialto Bridge and few miutes’ walk from the spectacular Basilica of San Marco and the Doge’s Palace with the Bridge of Sighs.

The hotel has its own private dock for water taxis, the fastest and most comfortable way of transport. The vaporetto water-bus stop, Calle Vallaresso, is 3 minutes’ walk from the hotel.

Rooms and suites are spacious, beautiful, furnished with style, all different, with chandeliers, tapestry rugs, dark wooden beams, gilt mirrors, columns, wood panelling, ornately carved ceilings and Venetian antiques.

Rooms and suites have free WiFi, air conditioning, flat-screen satellite TV, safety deposit box, minibar, en-suite marble bathroom with free toiletries and hairdryer, and other amenities.
